-The Motivation Breakthrough: Secrets To Turning On The Tuned-Out Child-

Arlington, VA, December 11, 2007 - PBS today announced the release of the newest Richard Lavoie video, The Motivation Breakthrough: Secrets to Turning on the Tuned-Out Child. Nationally known educator Lavoie, whose past books and videos have focused on students with learning disabilities, now turns his hand to helping teachers and parents motivate the struggling student-in the mainstream but on the fringes of every classroom-in what promises to be his best-selling video to date.

Lavoie's snappy, humorous, and thought-provoking attitude punctuates the seminar-style video with proven techniques for engaging and inspiring even the most withdrawn student, the one who avoids work and rarely participates in classroom activities. The secret, according to Lavoie, is breaking through the barrier of "learned helplessness"; walls constructed around past academic failure and frustration--to discover what it is that each student really needs.

Based on Lavoie's book, The Motivation Breakthrough: 6 Secrets to Turning on the Tuned-Out Child, the 70-minute video offers clear examples of 8 motivators for different styles of learners, defined by such basic characteristics as gregariousness, autonomy, status, inquisitiveness, aggression, power, achievement, and affiliation. Drawing his audience into the process with an effective question-and-answer format, Lavoie paints verbal portraits of six sure-fire strategies for facilitating learning in the back rows of the classroom by drawing the students forward. Lavoie's record of successful books and videos for learning disabled students includes How Difficult Can This Be? The F.A.T. City Workshop, a PBS Video all-time best-seller, and Beyond F.A.T. City: A Look Back, a Look Ahead, both of which examine strategies for helping students with learning disabilities cope with Frustration, Anxiety and Tension in order to achieve their academic potential. Other Lavoie videos, It's So Much Work to Be Your Friend and Last One Picked: First One Picked On cover strategies for helping learning disabled students develop social skills. In When the Chips are Down, Lavoie offers teachers a guide for handling behavioral problems effectively and are available on shoppbs.com/education.

The Motivation Breakthrough is available in DVD format and may be purchased along with The Motivation Breakthrough book for $69.90 (plus shipping).
