PBS Takes Top Honors at News and Documentary Emmy Awards Nominations for Second Consecutive Year

- "P.O.V." Tops PBS Programs With Five Nominations Including Best Documentary for "Promises" -

- "NOVA" and "EGG the arts show" Receive Four Nods Each -



New York, NY, July 22, 2002 - PBS, with a total of 41 nominations, led the way for the second consecutive year, receiving more nominations than any other broadcast or cable entity at the 23rd Annual News and Documentary Emmy Awards. PBS was the overwhelming front-runner, with CBS in second place with a total of 26 Emmy nominations. The nominations were announced in New York earlier today by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

Now in its 15th season, P.O.V, PBS's award-winning showcase for personal documentaries, received five Emmy nominations. P.O.V. is produced by The American Documentary Inc. P.O.V.'s PROMISES was nominated for Best Documentary in 2001.

WGBH Boston's NOVA, the popular science series, and EGG THE ARTS SHOW, Thirteen/WNET's eclectic series about people making art across America, each garnered four nominations.

Receiving a total of three honors each were: the much-honored public affairs series, FRONTLINE, presented by WGBH Boston; Devillier Donegan Enterprises' long-running natural history series THE LIVING EDENS; PBS's off-beat and critically-praised special THE NATURAL HISTORY OF THE CHICKEN; and Thirteen/WNET's distinguished series GREAT PERFORMANCES: DANCE IN AMERICA.

Other PBS multiple nominees, with two nominations each, included, AMERICAN ROOTS MUSIC, EVOLUTION, and VERMEER: MASTER OF LIGHT (presented to public stations by American Public Television).

The awards ceremony will be held at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York on Tuesday, September 10th.
