LeVar Burton of READING RAINBOW Named Outstanding Performer in a Children's Series for Second Consecutive Year

 

New York, NY - May 20, 2002 - PBS was awarded two more Emmys for its children's series at the 29th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards ceremony, broadcast live on CBS from Madison Square Garden on Friday, May 17. The two wins, combined with the nine Emmys announced on May 12 at the Creative Craft Daytime Emmy Awards, bring PBS's total number of awards to 11, PBS is in third place overall in number of Daytime Emmy wins.

Of the 11 Emmys, nine were for PBS KIDS® series, making this the fifth consecutive year that PBS has earned more Emmys for its children's series than any other broadcast network.

SESAME STREET, now in its 33rd season, won the Emmy for Outstanding Pre-School Series for the eighth consecutive year. Since the Academy's creation of the pre-school category, SESAME STREET has dominated, winning each year. Earlier in the month, at the Creative Craft presentation, SESAME STREET was honored with five Emmys. The series now has a total of 85 Emmys.

LeVar Burton, host and executive producer of READING RAINBOW, won his second consecutive Emmy for Outstanding Performer in a Children's Series. Previously, at the Creative Craft awards, READING RAINBOW was named Outstanding Children's Series, an honor the series won last year as well. Now in its 18th season, READING RAINBOW has won a total of 18 Emmys.
