PBS Schedules Special "America Responds" Programming as Part of Its Ongoing Coverage of This Week's Events Friday

Special Editions of "Washington Week" and "Wall $treet Week With Louis Rukeyser" Provide Lead-In to "America Responds: A Special Report"

Alexandria, Va., September 13, 2001 - AMERICA RESPONDS: A SPECIAL REPORT, bringing in live conversations with guests from around the country discussing the cultural and historical impact of the national crisis, will air on Friday, September 14 from 9-10 p.m. (check local listings). Anchored by WASHINGTON WEEK's Gwen Ifill (from Washington) and interviewer and broadcast journalist Charlie Rose (from New York), the special will also feature award-winning veteran journalist Bill Moyers.

The broadcast will originate from studios in New York and Washington, D.C., with segments from Los Angeles, Boston, Minneapolis/St. Paul, and Baton Rouge. Each city's coverage will focus on a particular aspect of the situation. In Los Angeles, for instance, KCET will offer a talk with Edward Zwick, creator of "thirtysomething" and director of "The Siege," the 1998 film about a terrorist takeover of New York, and its effects on civil liberties.

Special guests drawn from those at the forefront of this country's cultural and political life will be announced for the special which analyzes the national impact of this week's tragic events.

Prior to the SPECIAL REPORT, Ms. Ifill will host a special edition of WASHINGTON WEEK at 8 p.m., focusing on this week's events in Washington, and then at 8:30 p.m., Louis Rukeyser will host a special edition of WALL $TREET WEEK, looking at the effects of the terrorist attacks on the financial community.

The three programs will be packaged into a seamless two-hour whole, with an opportunity for stations to do local cut-ins for five minutes at 9:30 p.m.

The regularly scheduled Friday programming - LOS ROMEROS: THE ROYAL FAMILY OF THE GUITAR and EGG: THE ARTS SHOW, will be offered to stations as an alternative feed.
