On April 12, 18, 20 and 25, the University of Georgia’s Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication announced winners for the 76th Annual Peabody Awards for the best in electronic media for 2016. PBS programs received four awards in the documentary category, including “Confronting ISIS” and “Exodus” from FRONTLINE as well as INDEPENDENT LENS “Trapped” and POV “Hooligan Sparrow.”
In addition, the Independent Television Service (ITVS) was named the Institutional Award winner by the Peabody Awards Board of Jurors. This accolade honors institutions whose work and commitment to broadcast media define and transform the field.
Since its founding, ITVS has won 32 Peabody Awards and has funded more than 1,400 films, including Kirby Dick and Amy Ziering’s “Invisible War,” David France’s “How to Survive a Plague,” Marco Williams and Whitney Dow’s “Two Towns of Jasper” and Leslee Udwin’s “India's Daughter.”
“These works remain as relevant today as when they were initially broadcast and have made an impact that is impossible to measure,” the awards organization said in announcing its plan to honor ITVS. “At a time when public media is under political attack, there is no better time to recognize the vital contributions to public discourse and knowledge than that provided by ITVS.”
The Peabody Awards will be presented during a ceremony hosted by Rashida Jones on May 20, 2017, at Cipriani Wall Street in New York. PBS and FUSION will simultaneously air the ceremony on Friday, June 2, at 9/8c (check local listings). For more information, please click here.
