PBS received 58 nominations for the 64th Primetime Emmy® Awards, the most ever for public media. The nominees were announced July 19, 2012 by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.
PBS programs receiving multiple nominations include MASTERPIECE CLASSIC “Downton Abbey” (16 nominations), MASTERPIECE MYSTERY! “Sherlock: A Scandal in Belgravia” (13), MASTERPIECE CLASSIC “Great Expectations” (4) and GREAT PERFORMANCES (5 episodes), AMERICAN MASTERS (4), PROHIBITION (3) MASTERPIECE CONTEMPORARY (2) and SESAME STREET (2).
“We are absolutely thrilled with today’s news,” said PBS President & CEO Paula Kerger. “Not only are the number of nominations for “Downton Abbey” and “Sherlock” incredible, we are honored that so many other PBS icon series were recognized, with multiple nominations for AMERICAN MASTERS, GREAT PERFORMANCES, Ken Burns’s PROHIBITION and even SESAME STREET in primetime. In addition, a number of our arts programs and our independent film showcase, INDEPENDENT LENS, were also nominated. I am tremendously proud of all of PBS’ producers and of PBS’ commitment to bring exceptional programming across many genres.”
The Primetime Emmy Awards will be telecast September 23, 2012, on ABC from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles.
