On Dec. 21, 2011, winners of the 2012 Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Awards were announced. This year's recipients include INDEPENDENT LENS "Hell and Back Again" and NOVA "Japan's Killer Quake." In addition, member station Detroit Public TV received an award. The duPont Award winners will be honored during a ceremony on Jan. 19, 2012 at Columbia University.

Premiering on PBS in May 2012, INDEPENDENT LENS' "Hell and Back Again" follows one soldier’s experience fighting the war in Afghanistan and recovering from a serious injury back in the U.S.
NOVA's documentary on "Japan's Killer Quake" offers an eyewitness account and investigation of the epic earthquake, tsunami and nuclear crisis that hit Japan.
Detroit Public TV was honored for "Beyond the Light Switch," a two-part, two-hour documentary series that adds a balanced perspective to the national energy debate.
In addition, PBS congratulates NPR member station WNYC for winning a duPont Award for its two-part investigative series “Alleged Illegal Searches by the NYPD.” WNYC was also a finalist for its youth media project “Radio Rookies: Coming Up in 2011.”
