PBS and NHK Sign Cooperation Agreement for HDTV Programs

Cannes, October 8, 2002 - NHK and PBS announces a partnership to bring US and Japanese audiences HDTV (high-definition) programs. NHK and PBS will produce five HDTV programs a year during the three-year agreement. Program production will include a variety of genre, and production costs and rights will be shared by NHK and PBS on a program by program basis.

NHK President Katsuji Ebisawa expressed his delight at working with PBS saying, "NHK has always put the highest priority on fulfilling its duty as a public broadcaster by offering high-quality services for our viewers. We are pleased to be able to work together with PBS to further pursue our common goal."

"We are delighted to partner with our public broadcasting colleagues in Japan," commented Pat Mitchell, President and CEO of PBS. "This dynamic alliance will better integrate our educational, informative, engaging content with the incredible technology of HDTV in a way that serves the citizens of both nations."
