ALEXANDRIA, Va. - April 17, 2001 ÷ Jennifer Fabian Browning, senior advisor to PBS President & CEO Pat Mitchell, has been appointed senior director of PBS digital cable and DBS strategy, it was announced by Wayne Godwin, executive vice president of member affairs at PBS.
In this newly created position, Ms. Browning will lead an interdepartmental team at PBS, in collaboration with America's Public Television Stations (APTS), to establish digital carriage agreements with cable operators and DBS providers. She will report to Mr. Godwin.
"In light of PBS's commitment to ensuring that millions of Americans will have access to expanded programming and education services on their local public television station's digital signal, we are dedicating more resources to this effort," said Mr. Godwin. "Jennifer's telecommunications and business experience will be extremely valuable as we join with APTS in pursuing digital carriage for our member stations."
Last fall, PBS and APTS jointly signed a groundbreaking agreement with Time Warner Cable whereby the digital signals of all 140 public television stations in markets with Time Warner Cable systems will be carried on the local cable service. PBS and APTS negotiated this agreement on behalf of stations in Time Warner Cable markets to ensure carriage of digital signals as stations begin to make the transition to digital broadcasting.
Since joining PBS last June, Ms. Browning has worked closely with Ms. Mitchell on a variety of issues, including strategic planning, education initiatives, policy issues, and board of directors and station communications. Previously, she served for two years as director of market analysis in the Federal Communications Commission's office of plans and policy, where she specialized in telecommunications and cable mergers, as well as competition issues. Prior to that, she held positions in business development and strategic planning in London and Hong Kong. Ms. Browning earned a B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania, and an M.B.A. from INSEAD business school in Fontainebleau, France.
