INDEPENDENT LENS Receives a GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Documentary

Winners of the 27th Annual GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) Media Awards were announced on April 2, 2016 at a ceremony held at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles. PBS’ INDEPENDENT LENS “Kumu Hina” took home the award for Outstanding Documentary.

INDEPENDENT LENS “Kumu Hina” showcases a momentous year in which Kumu Hina, a native Hawaiian mahu (transgender) teacher, inspires a tomboyish young girl to claim her place as leader of an all-male hula troupe, as she herself searches for love and a fulfilling romantic relationship with an unpredictable young Tongan man.

The 27th Annual GLAAD Media Awards will air on Logo on Monday, April 4 at 10 p.m. ET. Additional awards will be presented at the GLAAD Media Awards event at the Waldorf Astoria in New York on Saturday, May 14, 2016. PBS’ TO THE CONTRARY “Dividing the United Methodist Church” is nominated in the Outstanding TV Journalism – Newsmagazine category.
